iBeta broadens options for accredited independent biometric testing

July 24, 2017 – Biometrics companies may have more options than they realize to improve their technologies and prove their credibility by testing them against established standards. Different standards for biometrics application performance are still evolving, along with the technology and markets for those applications. A standard originally set for Electronic Prescription of Controlled Substances (EPCS) is benefiting a growing number of companies, including ones that do not offer technologies for that particular application, says Gail Audette, quality manager for leading independent testing firm iBeta. NAB Show 2017

In April iBeta visited the NAB Show 2017 (National Association of Broadcasters) in Las Vegas, NV.  Since we work more and more with streaming and connected media products for our clients, it was a good opportunity to see emerging technologies and to network with potential future clients. There was a big focus on virtual reality and 360 Video, but only time will tell which of these technologies will become a staple in our lives, and which will fade away just like the only briefly hyped Google Glass. We observed a potential shift away from HD to 4K and the inclusion of HDR (high dynamic range) to improve fullness of color, but with the emerging 8K technology, I wonder if 4K will become merely a short-time bridge to 8K.    ... read more

Strength of Function for Authenticators for Biometrics

How strong is that padlock? How strong is that safe? NIST has proposed a strength function that can be used to compare the strength of biometrics. Such a strength function could even be used to compare biometric authentication to other forms of authentication like passwords as well as multi-factor types of authentication. Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ enter mobile testing matrix

The highly anticipated Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ have arrived here at iBeta, and have entered service in our mobile testing lab. The Galaxy S8 offers a 5.8 inch AMOLED screen at 570 ppi, while the Galaxy S8+ has a larger 6.2 inch AMOLED screen at 529 ppi, both at an 18:9 aspect 1440×2960 pixel resolution. Both phones run Android 7.0 Nougat on an octa-core Snapdragon 835 with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage, have 12MP rear facing and 8MP front facing cameras, a fingerprint sensor, an iris scanner, and a heart rate sensor, and features both 80.11AC (with gigabit speeds supported) and Bluetooth 5.0 with Near Field Communications (NFC). We expect that the general need for these phones in test will be for the 18:9 aspect ratio: When displaying 16:9 content, the S8 and S8+ will display black bars to fill the unused space – and while the end-user can change this in the settings, it will effect the image quality. Given the prospective popularity of this phone we are expecting to see a lot of 18:9 content coming soon, and this will make our test phones very busy over the coming months. The S8 and S8+ have an optional accessory called Samsung DeX, which is mobile-to-PC transition tool that can turn the Galaxy S8 into a PC. Similar to Microsoft’s Continuum feature, the Samsung DeX tool will be compatible with the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+, and will offer users an Android-based desktop-like experience. Samsung Galaxy S8 users will have to plug the handset into the DeX Station, which will connect the handset to... read more

iBeta Completes Spoofing and Liveness Testing Project

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 3/28/2017 Media Contact: Jonathan Cornwell iBeta Quality Assurance 303-627-1110 Evaluation of Multiple Biometric Subsystem Vendor’s Products for SFAR Denver, CO – iBeta Quality Assurance, a leading full-service biometrics, software quality, security, and performance testing lab, recently completed a successful project for a mid-sized bank to evaluate the False Accept Rate (FAR), False Reject Rate (FRR), and Spoof False Accept Rate (SFAR) of several biometric subsystem vendor’s products across multiple modalities. “Spoofing and liveness testing is an increasingly important part of any thorough evaluation of biometric technology as black hats look for new ways around improved biometrics-based security. The latest draft of NIST SP 800-63-3, Digital Identity Guidelines mentions that presentation attack detection is being considered as a mandatory requirement,” said Dr. Kevin Wilson, Director of Biometrics at iBeta. SFAR testing was informed by ISO/IEC 30107-1 standards in biometric presentation attack detection and are consistent with other applicable standards and practices from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). iBeta the Only NIST NVLAP Accredited Biometrics Test Lab for $10 Billion Mobile Biometrics Industry

While the mobile biometrics industry will grow to $10 billion in 2018 according to a report released March 7, 2017 by the Biometrics Research Group, Inc. (BRG), iBeta Quality Assurance remains the only National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) NVLAP accredited biometrics laboratory. Biometrics has become one of the keystone technologies enabling the enormous growth in mobile commerce. The BRG release states: “Mobile biometric applications operate on mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets, with “apps” utilizing embedded software and sensors to make secure use of those devices and apps more convenient. They do so by enabling the owner of a device to use their biometrics to authenticate their identity as an enhancement or alternative to passwords. The report defines the mobile biometrics market and the forces contributing to its exponential, global growth. … [BRG] projects that revenue associated with mobile biometrics will total US$10 billion based on 3.2 billion users. This projection has increased from our last research report on mobile biometrics released in 2016, in which we projected that biometrics in mobile devices will generate approximately US$9 billion worth of revenue by 2018 for the biometrics industry.” Biometrics Research Group projects $10 billion in mobile biometrics revenue in 2018 As the leading biometrics testing and certification laboratory in the United States, iBeta provides a full range of biometrics services including CBEFF, BioAPI, data interchange, interoperability, performance and acceptance, scenario testing, EPCS, and Spoofing and Liveness Testing.
