iBeta Quality Assurance (“iBeta”), a NNLAP (National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program) accredited Biometrics Testing Laboratory, received another approval for its biometrics certification process:
The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has approved iBeta’s Certification Process for a Biometrics Subsystem for the Electronic Prescriptions for Controlled Substances (EPCS) pursuant to 21 Code of Federal Regulations (C.F.R) § 1311.300. iBeta is now authorized to review, verify and certify that particular electronic prescribers or electronic pharmacy applications meet the requirements of DEA’s regulations governing EPCS. iBeta’s authorization is limited to the biometric subsystem.
The DEA-EPCS program allows practitioners, hospitals and pharmacies the option to utilize electronic prescriptions for controlled substances. The Interim Final Rule (March 31, 2010) allows that a biometric can serve as one factor in the two-factor authentication. The two factors come from something you know, something you are (such as a biometric) and something you have.
The DEA notes that practitioners might find strong passwords more burdensome than a biometric or token over the long run. Dr. Wilson, iBeta’s Director of Biometrics said, “Doctors and other prescribers are much less likely to leave their biometric at home. Any technology that makes a physician’s day easier, benefits both the doctor and the patient.”
